John Wick is a film and series that follow the story of the assassin, John Wick, played by Keanu Reeves. It has been relatively successful and has a new spin off film, Ballerina (although John is not the titular character in this film), that has just released.
I recently watched John Wick 3 & 4, and what I have noticed on watching these films is that there is very little dialogue from the character himself. If I would have to guess the films usually have about 80 percent action/fight scenes and 20 percent dialogue.
While the films are still very entertaining to watch, it really goes to show how having fewer words can still make for a great story. As someone who loves slow burn kind of films as well, I think this style of filmmaking is genius if you want to transcend borders.
Films such as Transformers and the Fast & Furious have usually done well overseas for this reason. Not because foreign audiences have this specific taste in film, but because it makes it more enjoyable to watch rather than having to A.) Read subtitles, and B.) Watch a dubbed version.
These films are watched and enjoyed despite differences of language and culture. What also makes the John Wick films so great is the diverse assassins and locations used throughout. The films become less american and more digestible to global audiences.
Overall, I find John Wick films a great watch. They may not make you “think” as much, but they are great to see if you want to unwind and go on a fun adventure.
