Stop wasting time by counting it

If you are reading this, chances are you did a no-no. Instead of studying, prepping, making that call, or doing the thing. You stave it off in hopes that there will be enough time to get to it eventually.

Well, I’m here to tell you that that delaying something will only become just that, delayed indefinitely. If you felt the need to not prioritize that action or project in the first place, then you have already decided to subconsciously see it as something not urgent or important. Therefore, it becomes easier to overlook it. Especially when you have decided it doesn’t need to be at the top of your agenda.

Tomorrow isn’t promised, and neither is time

It is very easy to prolong things by assuming that you have unlimited time to get things done. Maybe your deadline is even a couple months away. However, waiting to do things at the very last minute will only further set you back.

Chances are you already know all of this, but you still choose to not do it. When you recognize that you aren’t setting yourself up for success, it’s time to look deeper into why that could be. There may be an underlying reason for not focusing on what you need to do.

The solution? Count time.

What do I mean exactly when I say this? I mean to count your time, your hours in a day, your minutes as well. One example of this. I am typing this out at exactly 3:58p.m. Usually, I start to get ready for work around 4:15 p.m. 4:25, if I am being exceptionally lethargic.

One thing I like to do is work in blocks of time. 30 minutes is ideal with 5 minute breaks. Of course the blocks get larger as time goes on. 1 hour block and 20 min break, etc. So I began working on this blog post a couple minutes ago and have a timer going. I should be finished by around 4:25p.m.

Although I know that I get ready at 4:15p.m. I know that a couple more minutes won’t kill me. I might even be done before then. (It’s 4:02 now) Do you see how that works? I am consciously counting my time.

Sure, I could have used this small amount of time to doom scroll on social media, but I have not posted a blog in awhile. So I took the time to make one. Gettings things done is really just that, making the time for it.

Also, it’s 4:06 p.m. I have just enough time to revise, add tags, and be right on time, all because I took the initiative to do it. So count your time, and try doing things even if you think that window of time is small. You can fit so much in a day when you do.
