How I finally mastered Time Blocking

By

So awhile back I made an article about the different methods of planning your time/tasking. While I still firmly believe that the 1-3-5 method works better for me, time blocking truly has more benefits.

Previously, I explained that I had some struggles with deadlines, which is something that we confront continuously in time blocking. Tasks should be finished within that time frame.

If at first you don’t succeed, try again

So I decided to try again. Why not? I had way too many things to do; although I loved the 1-3-5 method, it wasn’t helping me tackle everything.

After I had posted that article I tried time blocking again. I was eventually able to do it with ease. The only downside? I became burn out.

So how could I work through time blocking without getting overworked? The method itself practically asks to overwork. That’s the actual goal.

A mindset change

Changing how you feel about the work you’re doing or the processes you make to continue that work is what helped me the most. Before, I would look at the itinerary for the day, and almost inwardly groan by all the things I needed to do.

I decided if this was something I was going to try to do, and try to do well, I needed to change my attitude about it.

Instead, I would flip those negative feelings and think about how excited I was to complete them. I also decided to implement something that would really motivate me.

Reward based system

Something I decided to do was dedicate an hour of social media time only on Sundays. Not more, not less. Just one hour (the implication being that I limit my social media time by zero throughout the rest of the week). I find that is more than sufficient enough time to socialize and produce content.

Since I typically observe Sunday as the day of rest, what better way to rest and be a potato than be on social media? By working in great capacity over the span of 6 days, it only makes sense to have a lazy day at the end.

We aren’t machines. So by doing so, I don’t feel guilty for spending time on something so unproductive (something I struggled with), and I was able to use that time to really decompress from the week.

Find what works for you

Again, this is what worked for me. This may not work for each individual, so feel free to take and experiment with different ways you plan your days. If you’re consistent and keep at it, you too can master time blocking. 🙂
