Hello everyone! Here is an update on where I am in the novel writing process.

I am 79 percent finished editing the book. I decided it was a great time to start introducing Beta readers. The first round of Beta readers include my sisters. Since they like to read I thought it was only right to show them what I made.

I printed out two copies that were about 17-18 pages long. They include the title of the novel, an epigraph, the prologue, and the first chapter.

Why now?

I felt that it was a great time to introduce them since my novel is half way done. During this time beta readers could read one edited chapter (the first one).

It’s helpful to gauge reaction on the first read through for potential audiences or even agents. For example, agents request 10 pages-3 chapters. I decided to go with 17 pages as it is the first chapter and it’s enough to possibly pique interest.

Since the next phase would be looking for an agent, it’s only right to get a test run with trusted people around you. It’s recommended to find beta readers that not only read, but are willing to give your book a chance.

Since this is such a big thing to ask of someone I kept it quite short, my sisters are both moms and I thought it would be easier for them to read one chapter. If they decide they like it then it’s time to bring out the full manuscript.

Don’t worry if it is nerve wracking

Having someone else’s eyes on your work can definitely be nerve wracking but think of it as an opportunity to make your story as strong as it can be. After getting feedback I plan to take into consideration any comments, questions, or concerns.

Also, try not to take it personal. Remember, you have a bias. It’s your story and you’re proud of it, but you need to have as many eyes on it so you know what works and what doesn’t.

Lastly, thank your Beta readers for their time! They are going into this completely by surprise so show grace and most importantly gratitude for their support!
